This year not only does the Halloween Special fall on my birthday, but it falls on a birthday that ends with a “0”, so I’ve been completely self-indulgent and obscure. This is my favourite book cover and also my favourite book: “The Player of Games” by Iain M. Banks.

The original artwork is by Mark Salwowski, but the book cover that I have differs slightly from the image he has on his site, so I’ve gone with my book version. The main differences in the copy I own are, the pink pieces are a softer pink, the main piece is a single warrior with a sword and shield facing left, as opposed to the piece facing right merged with the likeness of the player, the player in the background isn’t fully in shadow, and the black piece in the left corner looks a bit more menacing. I’ve brought back some old (and possibly future) enemies and friends to use as the pieces, except for the cart pulling bird lizard and a few of the minor pieces.

If you haven’t read any Ian M. Banks I would strongly recommend his Culture novels, in particular “The Player of Games”.

Happy Halloween everyone!
